Automating reddit marketing with o4-mini - Dev Diary 3

What happened this week
I am sick. I’ve got a bike race on Sunday and I am unsure if I’ll be able to participate. Sucks. Besides, I am not able to do much of anything. Except for cutting some video footage for my golf Youtube channel and fixing some bugs in one of my apps. But that’s it. And, a lot of sleeping of course.
But I also got around to replace Google Ads with a python script that scrapes relevant subreddits for me and notifies me via telegram if there are new posts that might be worth a reply. More on this below.
Reddit marketing with o4-mini
Google Ads was not it for me. Instead of dumping money into bidding for a keyword that people spend 10x the amount of budget on, I switched to do what has worked best for me in the past years: direct marketing on Reddit. Enough people come to different subreddits and ask for solutions that products of me provide, so its only logical to suggest these people to check them out! Now, this is a challenge when you have multiple products that serve different needs. You would need to monitor a ton of new posts on relevant subreddits, understand their content and context, think of a good and meaningful, not too upselling reply, and this at all times so your comment does not go under in a swarm of comments. This would be a huge task and time sink.
Since GPTs are as cheap as they are now, this however becomes a super easy task.
Instead of doing all the work myself, I created a python script that scrapes the relevant subreddits for me,
processes each new post with o4-mini
(rates the relevance of the post for my products from 0 to 100),
and then notifies me via telegram if the post is relevant.
Doing so has helped me more to get beta testers and feedback for my products than any other marketing channel so far.
Working on a free golf app
Also, last week I progressed work on a new local-first golf app. It’s free and you can use it both on desktop at home to plan your rounds, and on mobile to get yardages and track shots.
Since I’ve been talking alot golf dev on Reddit, I thought it would be good to have a place to discuss it. So, I created a discord for hangouts and discussions: https://discord.gg/nzS4BcgEZQ
What’s next?
Recovering from sickness and getting back into the gym, hopefully participate in the race on Sunday. I am working again, but its all very slow.
